Albert/ Albert

storyboard et image du film

I begun to shoot some scenes with Albert, Emily's brother.

You can't see it on the image, but he actually got neither lower body nor hands yet... I had to begin shooting with an unfinished puppet.

My MA is ending the 23rd of January, wich is VERY soon. I'm struggling a bit to give everything back: essay, presentation documents, researchs... and the unfinished film.

I will still be shooting untill the 9th of February, so I MIGHT finish the film after all!

Ca y est j'ai commencé à tourner des plans avec Albert, le petit frère d'Emily :)

Tel que vous le voyez, il n'a pas encore de mains, ni de pieds, ni de pantalon, mais ca ne se voit pas sur l'image finale: j'ai été obligé de commencer le tournage avant de l'avoir completement fini.

Je finis mon Master le 23 janvier, donc TRES bientot, mais je tourne jusqu'au 9 fevrier, alors peut-etre que je vais tout finir apres tout...

En tout cas là maintenant je travaille sacrément pour boucler mon devoir écrit plus des tas d'autres trucs pour la fin du MA!

More hamsters/ Un peu plus de hamster

Well... this is supposed to be a PRODUCTION blog!!!
The still with the big shadow above is the scene I'm working on during Christmas break (now...)
It's the scene where Emily is telling her brother how her hamster is in fact a dinosaure. The shadow the hamster is casting is going to transform into a dinosaure one... a bit of 2D animation for me. They closed the University in Bristol and I couldn't do any StopMo anyway, so that's making the best of my time really.
The stills above are from the scene where the hamster actually begin to think that he might be a dinosaure after all... and begin to change into one.
More than 20 seconds that scene lasts... a piece of heroism I did before leaving Bristol, in 3 days. I was sooo scared anything could happen to the camera, or the lights... but it went OK, and the scene looks quite good

Bon c'est un blog de PRODUCTION oui ou zut...
L'image avec la grosse ombre, c'est celle de la scene surlaquelle je travaille pendant les vacances de Noel. Emily est en trai de raconter sa petite histoire, et l'ombre du hamster se change en dinosaure!
Les images en dessous sont extraites de la scene durant laquelle le hamster se dit qu'en fait oui... ca se pourrait bien qu'il soit vraiment un dinosaure. Et il se transforme... vive le pouvoir de l'auto-persuasion.
j'ai bouclé cette scene de plus de 2O secondes en 3 jours, juste avant de partir de Bristol pour revenir à Paris.
J'avais tellement la trouille qu'il arrive quoique ce soit à la camera ou aux lampes... mais tout s'est bien passé, et la scène est plutôt réussie (je trouve :D)

Cheers to my dad for this amazing contribution to my film-I mean appart from largely financing my studies of course- : he named the dinosaure (in relation to the Hamster that is called Profiterole)
Well, these people of the 60's... they knew something about humour.

Mass production/ Fabrication à la chaine

Yepee: with my brand new moulds I press loads of hamsters and dinosaurs.
Otherwise I haven t dont much today. I spent most of the afternoon doing a green screen test that didn't work at the end.

Youpiii: grace à mes nouveaux moules je fabrique à la chaine des dinosaures et des hamsters.
Hum... sinon je n'ai pas fait grand chose aujourd'hui: j ai passé mon apres midi à tester un fond vert qui n'a pas marché :(

Profiterole

You might have noticed him on the previous photo: Emily's hamster has now officially begun his career as an actor. He's doing well so far.
I named him Profiterole from the desert that is made of vanilla ice cream and liquid chocolate.

Vous l'avez peut etre remarqué dans la photo d'avant: le hamster d'Emily l'a enfin rejoint sur le tournage. Sa performance pour l'instant est remarquable :)
Il s'appelle Profiterole.

Behind the scene/ Coulisses du tournage

Plan 11: Emily sets up at her desk and looks for a book... on dinosaurs.
As you might have guessed, I'm not shooting the plan in the same order they appears on the film.
I thought I might show a bit more of "behind the scenes" stuff: her you can see the most usefull thing I have on the shooting: The rig! Thanks to Fab, Andy and Yann for that :)

Plan 11: Emily s'installe à son bureau et cherche son livre sur les... dinosaures.
Bien sur, je ne tourne pas les plans dans l'ordre du film fini: cette scene est presque au debut du film.
La deuxième photo, c'est un peu les coulisses. On y voit un des accessoires les plus utiles de tout le film: le "rig" qui sert à tenir Emily debout. Merci à Fab, Andy et Yann pour ca!

I gave it a thought... but I'm still unsure I want to post stuff that is not related to the project. As I don't have time to do much beside it...
Anyway, at least here are some drawing related to the project. Excerpts from the story board.
Emily is on her desk frightened. She looks at the small dinosaure destroying everything in her room. Then, her little brother comes back into the room...!!!!

Je réfléchis au fait de poster d'autres trucs que mon projet sur mon blog...
En attendant voila des dessins extraits de mon story board.
Emily est effrayée, ell assiste impuissante au saccage de sa chambre. Soudain la porte s'ouvre et son petit frère fait irruption dans la chambre...!!!

Steadily progressing/ Lentement mais surement: Ca avance

Nooooo... not the Teddy bear... don't eat the Teddy! He's done nothing to you!!!!
Noooonn, pas mes peluches, ne touche pas à mes peluches Cruel Dinosaure, elles ne t'ont rien fait!!!

(don't worry, there will be no actual diologues in the film)

(il n'y a pas de dialogues dans le vrai film rassurez vous!)

En attendant, le plan 31 est fini. Dejà 3 plans. Ca commence a ressembler à quelque chose de chouette ce projet :)

After a good WE/ Après un super Week End

I had to take a few day off to rebuilt a head for Emily. After a good WE I am back in OD16...

The animation on this scene is not amaaazing but quite fun. Emily panics when the hamster roaws again (he is on the floor that's why you can't see him) and she jumps on her desk.

Je n ai pas tourné mercredi, jeudi et vendredi pour reconstruire une nouvelle tête d'Emily. Après un WE tres sympa je reprends le tournage.

L animation n'est pas démente, mais assez rigolote. Emily panique en entendant le hamster/dinausore rugir et elle saute sur le bureau. On ne voit pas le hamster parce qu il a sauté sur le sol. Et aussi parce que je ne l ai pas encore fabriqué.

So that's the last image. Emily is looking behind her book to see where the roaring she heard came from.
I have to make a new head because this one is falling appart (check the top of the head)

Je suis en ce moment en train de refaire une tete, parce que celle ci tombe en morceaux (regardez le dessus de la tete et vous verrez une ENORME craquelure)

At last! I began the shooting... :)
I first posted the storyboard, and then some screen shots of the actual scene (it's not finished yet)

Ouf, ca y est, j ai commencé à tourner!
Je mets en premier les images du story board, puis des images de ma scène (je ne l ai pas encore tout à fait finie, comme vous pourez le voir)

Emily's Body/ le corps d'Emily

I first did the armature,

then I covered it with synthetic foam (the stuff you put in cushions)

And then I sew, I sew I sew

Fabrication d'Emily, avec la technique expliquée par notre adoooorable et ultra compétente technicienne Stop Mo de l'UWE (mon université, pour ceux qui savent pas ce que je fais en ce moment)
J'ai fait l'armature
puis l'ai recouvert de mousse synthétique (un truc qui sert à faire les coussins)

Ensuite je recouvre le tout d'un morceau de collant, et je couds, je couds, je couds...

Et voilà

The back is less nice. The square thing that comes up her... back is here for the rig. No more feet screwed to the floor. It always end up badly, at least with such a big headed puppet

C'est moins sexy de dos, et le truc qui lui sort de fesses, c'est un K&S pour la fixer à une sorte de gréement qui la maintient... comme ça pas besoin de la fixer au sol par les pieds... ça finit toujours en catastrophe la fixation des pieds au sol!

Set preview/ Aperçu du décor final

Yesterday in Uni I began to set up some of the set and mess around with the lights and camera.
As you can see on the picture I have two walls, the painted desk and a beeeeautifull window, that let the light come through.
Just... it's not the lightening I am going to shoot with. It's just the neons above.

Hier à l'Université j'ai commencé à installer le plateau et la caméra.
Voila finis deux murs, le bureau, et une suuuperbe fenêtre qui laisse vraiment passer la lumière. Ce n'est pas du tout l'éclairage qu il va y avoir pendant le tournage! En vrai la fenêtre fait une super jolie lumière sur le sol et le bureau.

Voilà le salon de notre joooli appartement... il y a deux mois

well... the environment changed a bit since!

Fab' is doing well with the props: here is Emily's desk... made with my wooonderfull scroll saw and a lot of care.
Next step is painting, with the Pebeo Deco pots you can see on the picture.

Et de son coté Fabrice avance bien avec les props: voilà le bureau d'Emily... fait avec ma meeerveilleuse scie et beaucoup de soin.
Prochaine étape: la peinture, avec les petits pots de Pebeo Déco.

POLYFILLA

It's been a few days that I haven't updated the blog.
So here where I am:
I made a mould for Emily's left hand (the left hand only, because I am going to make a test first)
So here is a picture of the first step: when I put the plastiline hand in clay.

Je n'ai rien posté ces derniers jours. Bon je me rattrape:
J'ai fait un moule de la main gauche d'Emily.
Voilà une image de la première étape du moule, quand je mets le modèle en plastiline dans de la terre.

In the right hand corner of the next picture you can see the finished mold.

Next to it are some white beads. It's POLYFILLA.
When you put it in boiling water (A kettle is a must) it became malleable and you can shape it as you want.
Once it's cold it's rock hard, but just put it back in hot water, and you can modify the shape again!
amaaazing!


Bon, dans le coin à droite vous pouvez voir le moule fini (comme dans les émissions de cuisine, ça a l'air drolement facile!)

A coté il y a des petites boules en plastique blanches. C'est du POLYFILLA.
Quand on met ces petites boules dans de l'eau bouillante (il faut avoir une bouilloire électrique à côté, c'est mieux) elles deviennent transparentes, s'agglutinent entre elles et sont toutes malléables. On peut donc leur donner la forme qu on veut.
En refroidissant la forme modelée devient toute solide.
Et un passage dans l'eau chaude permet de la remodifier à volonté.

... je vous sens stupéfaits!

Here is Emily's pelvis, made of POLYFILLA, electric dices, and a piece of square K&S to rig the puppet.

Voilà le bassin d'Emily, fait en POLYFILLA et en dominos électriques (sans les vis pour l'instant)
Plus tard je vais poser les fils de fer qui vont former la colonne vertebrale et les jambes.
Le petit bout de métal carré est du K&S. Ca va me servir à fixer la marionnette sur une sorte de trépied pour la maintenir en place.

Props/ Le souci du detail

Look at these cuuute little Play-Doh pots. Made of Yellow Fimo and acrylic paint by my sweetheart. He is the wooonderful!
They are going to look wonderful in the set.

Oooo comme ils sont jolis ces petits pots de Play-Doh. C'est mon chéri qui les a fait, tout seul avec de la fimo jaune et de la peinture. Il est trooop fort ce Fabrice!
Mon décor va etre tout beau...
